'Artificial intelligence could deepen biases and make us more mechanical' - Times of India

#artificialintelligence

Nisheeth K Vishnoi teaches computer science at Yale University. Sharing his perspective with Times Evoke, he discusses biases that could tilt AI, how algorithms are changing humans -- and whether technology can eventually make music like Ravi Shankar My work in AI explores models and algorithms that can mitigate biases -- recently, a lot of AI-based technology has been shown to be even more biased than human judgement. This poses a serious challenge if decisions on the distribution of social resources or citizens' rights are made by such algorithms. If these include human biases in them, in situations where they're often used, like a judge relying on AI to decide whom to give bail to or not, the algorithms could treat different sections of society very differently. Great art comes from absorbed human attention -- but this ability is now being changed by AI. As the saying goes, a data scientist spends 90% of their time in cleaning data and 10% in complaining about the data. Their complaints may range from data size, faulty data distributions, Null values, data randomness, systematic errors in data capture, differences between train and test sets and the list just goes on and on. One common bottleneck theme is the enormity of data size where either the data doesn't fit into memory or the processing time is so large(In order of multi-mins) that the inherent pattern analysis goes for a toss. Data scientists by nature are curious human beings who want to identify and interpret patterns normally hidden from cursory Drag-N-Drop glance. Even after answering these questions, multiple sub-threads can emerge i.e can we predict how the Covid affected New year is going to be, How the annual NY marathon shifts taxi demand, If a particular route if more prone to have multiple passengers(Party hub) vs Single Passengers( Airport to Suburbs).

Technology should reach citizens, says Ravi Shankar at WCIT

Hyderabad: Allaying fears of job loss due to increasing use of newage technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning and others, Union Minister of Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Government has set up multiple committees on artificial intelligence, mapping technologies, cyber security for large scale implementation. Likening digital governance to good governance, he said India saved Rs 7000 crore by removing middlemen in delivery of government services. Various welfare programmes are being taken to doorsteps of people. "Technology should reach ordinary citizens. Story of India will be replicated on many parts," he said at the inaugural WCIT 2018 event at HICC. "There is no need to dear job losses due to artificial intelligence. There was a similar thing when computers came. But now they have revolutionised many sectors. Power of technology has to be harnessed and transition has to handled well," he said.
